A quick post today.A spicy potato curry from the aromatic Chettinad cuisine.I saw this in one of the blogs but unfortunately forgot to note which one.I recreated this from my memory.


I used:

Potato- 2 large
Onion-1,chopped
Mustard- 1 teaspoon
Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Curry leaves- a few
Salt to taste
Oil- 1 tablespoon

Roast and powder

Urad dhal-1 teaspoon
Peppercorns-1 teaspoon
Red chillies-2
Cumin seeds-1/2 a teaspoon

  1. Peel and cube potatoes.
  2. Microwave with enough water for 8 minutes or till 80% done.You can also do this on the stove top
  3. Drain the water completely and spread out on a kitchen towel.
  4. Heat oil in a wok and put in mustard,cumin seeds,curry leaves
  5. When the mustard splutters, saute onions till light brown.
  6. Put in the potato cubes and stir gently.
  7. Add salt and the masala powder and  stir to coat.
  8. On low flame roast the potato it is cooked and turns crisp.
  9. Remove from heat and serve as a side dish with rice dishes

  1. yes this is the recipe I wanted.actually ate this dry dish at a restaurant near the chennai highway and loved it. I even asked someone if she knew the recipe. but all thanks to you and am gonna make it very soon.

  2. Thanks for this lovely recipe pj.. my 2 yr old son is a die hard fan of potato fry.. this is a nice variation though with slightly mild spiciness..
