Lil Angel’s school was scheduled to start from the 3rd of last month. But since we were experiencing heat waves here, the local government postponed the re-opening date by a week. Needless to say, Lil Angel was overjoyed yet a bit sad that she still had to wait a whole week to flaunt her new uniform, bags and books and to meet her friends at school!

The day after they announced the postponement, it started raining!! And it has been as such till today. Everyday we wake up to a drizzly and cold morning.I just feel like staying under the warmth of the quilts and snooze for a few minutes longer. And about Lil Angel’s plight to wake up to school, the less said the better!

So, it started raining and we are still experiencing a dull and chilly climate. My worries lie in the fact that none of my clicks for the blog are bright enough. Photo editing does not bring out what I want or so I feel.

Anyway, due to the sudden change of temperature around us- from extremely hot climate to drizzly and chill, all of us fell sick at home. Actually, it was like we were taking turns to fall sick!Just as one person was recovering, the next one was down with fever and cold. Our main diet was soups, rasams and porridge. However,we are almost back to normal now [Touch-wood!].

During these episodes of fever and colds, we had this turmeric milk with pepper that mom used to make for me.It is a very simple concoction and very effective in soothing a sore throat and it does induce a good night’s sleep for me.

Turmeric has an antimicrobial and anti inflammatory effect.Pepper peps up the digestive juices and improves the appetite that is usually down during cold.I have use palm candy / panam kalkandu as a sweetenenr. Feel free to use sugar if this is not available..

This home remedy for sore throat / coughs and cold is my third post for this months blogging marathon -29, under the theme – Food for elderly / sickness….

I use:

A cup of milk
Palm candy to sweeten
A large pinch turmeric powder
A Large pinch or two freshly cracked pepper

  1. Heat milk and bring it to a boil.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well and simmer for a minute.
  3. Remove from heat and sip slowly to enjoy the soothing effect of this milk.

Note :
  • You must be able to feel the heat from the pepper when you taste the milk.
  • Use freshly ground / cracked pepper.
  • You can use regular sugar instead of palm candy.
  • Drink this sip by sip. This is not to be gulped down in one go.

Bon Appetit…
