Isn’t it always easy to mask a healthy stuff into something that a kid would love to eat!! That’s exactly why I made this Ragi Cookies and presented it to Lil Angel as Chocolate cookies. And she believed that and relished it. In fact I made these cookies yesterday morning and they were gone before evening! Everyone at home loved it.


Ok, I am not cheating her. It does have cocoa powder. I did not tell her what actually went into the cookies until the whole batch disappeared. When I did tell later last night she seemed to be like- Oh that’s cool!It did taste yum!When are you making this again?

I bet no one can find out it is made with Ragi flour!!

I had bookmarked this recipe when I was making a list for our A-Z marathon but made the Eggless Ragi Cake instead. This seemed the right time to make and post it for  Srivalli’s Kid’s delight event, hosted by Sandhya this month with the theme- Cooking with Whole Grains which also happens to be my theme for this week’s Blogging Marathon….

I used:
Adapted from: Lite Bite
Makes– 20 cookies[Will change depending on the size of the cookies]

Ragi flour / Finger Millet flour- 1 cup
Powdered sugar- 1/2 cup
Butter- 1/2 cup
Yogurt- 1 tablespoon
Milk- 1/8th cup [see point 2. and note below]
Cocoa powder- 1 tablespoon
Corn flour – 1 tablespoon
All purpose flour- 1 tablespoon
Baking powder- 1 teaspoon
Chocolate chips as required

1.Roast the ragi flour till the raw smell goes off. Take care not to burn the flour. In a bowl mix the ragi flour, corn flour,coca powder and baking powder. In another bowl mix butter, sugar and curd.


2. To the dry ingredients, add the wet ingredients and mix to firm dough. If the dough is crumbly add a few teaspoons of milk to get the right consistency[see note below]. Roll out portions of the dough and flatten very lightly and arrange them on a tray lined with butter paper. Decorate with chocolate chips.

3. Bake in a pre heated oven at 180 Degree C for 15- 20 minutes. Remove from oven and transfer gently to a wire rack. Once cool, enjoy it with juice / a cup of milk….

Lil Angel loved to dunk these cookies in a glass of Orange juice. I loved it with coffee.My nephew ate it as a snack without any drink.All in all everyone thought it a great snack!What more can I ask for!!!

Note:

  • The original recipe does not call for milk. I added 1/8 cup of milk. When I made the dough, it was too crumbly and dry.[You can see the dry dough and the moist cookies in the step pic- 2]. When I tried to roll into a ball, it never took shape.So I added milk , a little at a time to get the right consistency. The total quantity was 1/8th cup. So if your dough is crumbly add milk else skip it.
  • The cookies are a bit fragile so take care while transferring to a wire rack.
  • As soon as these are baked, they are soft. They become crisp after cooling.So do not over bake them.
  • The oven timings will vary with the size and thickness of the cookies.
  • You can add cinnamon powder / cardamom powder for a different taste.

  1. I always wanted to try ragi & chocolate combination because they resemble each other so much that kids wouldn't even notice this healthy ingredient in their treat. Thanks for the recipe, will try these for my son.
