This Avarakkai porriyal is one of Mom’s favorite dishes and I make this recipe quite often! Avarakkai / flatbeans is a vegetable that I use to make kootu or this dry curry.And this is one of the very few vegetable that my Lil one eats without complaint.


This meal was prepared many months or even a couple of years back and I just discovered this in my drafts when I was looking for something else!

So here is a very simple every day dish and one that is healthy and delicious nevertheless.

Quick Avarakkai Porriyal Recipe

A quick and easy vegetable dish that is a part of an Indian meal.

Ingredients
  • 200 grams Avarakkai ,chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Channa dal
  • 1 teaspoon Urad dal
  • 1 number Onion, thinly sliced
  • A few Curry leaves
  • 2 numbers Red chilies
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 teaspoon Grated coconut
Instructions
  1. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add mustard, urad dal and channa dal. Once the mustard pops, add curry leaves and onions. Saute till the onions turn soft

  2. .Add red chilies and the chopped vegetable.Add salt and mix well.

  3. Add very little water, cover and pressure cook for 2 whistles .Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and add coconut. 

  4. Switch on the heat and cook for a minute.If there is excess water in the cooker, cook for a few more minutes / until the water has evaporated. Remove onto a serving dish.

  5. The vegetable curry is ready to be served!

  • Adding onion is optional.
