Jowar Roti | Masala Jowar Rotti Recipe is a gluten free and vegan dish that is made with healthy Cholam / Jowar / Shorgham flour.

When it comes to rolling out parathas,I can make perfectly squared ones! And they look far better than the round ones I make! Most of the times my Roti and parathas are squares and no one minds that!

For this BM I made a conscious effort to roll out almost circular parathas but for this one, I let it be a square.

I had some red jowar that I got for last previous edition of mega BM and wanted to use it as quickly as possible before it falls prey to insects.

So I roasted it and ground it to a powder and used it to make this recipe. This post too is almost hot off the stove! Made it this evening with no time to even style the pic as I did not want to click in low light and had to capture at least a couple of pics in whatever light was remaining!

Instead of making the regular jowar roti, I decided to make a masala one . I was also skeptical about rolling it out as it is a gluten free flour. But I read about a method that would make rolling easy and I followed that .For a first timer, I think it has come out decently.

Here is another flatbread from the Chinese cuisine that starts with J

How to make Jowar Roti | Masala Jowar Rotti Recipe

Heat water in a pan and add the required quantity of salt. Let it come to a rolling boil. Switch off the heat and immediately add the jowar flour and mix well with a spoon/spatula.

Transfer it onto a bowl.Cover and set aside till it cools a bit. It should not become cold but let it be luke warm.Add grated cucumber, chili powder, sesame seeds[ the pic I clicked got deleted by mistake!] , colored capsicum, coriander leaves and knead the dough. If it is too sticky add a little more flour. It too dry sprinkle very little water.

Pinch a golf ball sized dough and place it on a greased plastic sheet / butter paper and dusting a little jowar flour, roll out gently into a 4″ roti. Gently transfer the rolled our dough onto your hand and turn it over onto a heated griddle.Cook on bot side, flipping over carefully, till light brown spots appear on both side.Remove from griddle and repeat for the remaining dough

Serve with a side of your choice.I served this with cucumber raita

Note:

  • If you find it very difficult to roll it / if the dough is very pasty, add a little whole wheat flour.
  • Adding tri colored capsicum is optional.Use any color available.
  • Chopped onions can be added.
  • I used red jowar to make the flour. You can use the regular white one as well.
  • Store bought flour can also be used.

  1. Loved that you have added some vegetables to our usual jowar roti. Adding vegetables turned those nutritious rotis more catchy, colourful and fabulous. Square shaped jowar roti rocks.

  2. We used to make similar roti with ragi flour. But you have made it so thin and crisp, they look so inviting. Perfect as a breakfast dish or a snack to have with coffee..

Jowar roti with capsicum sounds delish! And kudos to you for rolling it out successfully! Here I can’t make any legit shape of roti (most of them are amoeba inspired) and you make multiple kinds? Wow!!

Padmajha, must say you’ve pulled the roti off quite well…. a masala filled one and that too for the first time. Usually the masala makes it difficult to roll. Masala Jowar roti sour looks tempting.

PJ, your jowar roti has definitely cleared my doubt. Since my roti wasn’t white and whatever rotis I had seen on net had white color,I was worried if I had done some mistake. Then I asked Valli. she told me that there could be flour difference. Now from your post came to know that red jowar is there.
Jowar roti with veggies is quite a tasteful and nutritious choice for letter J

It’s not easy to roll a Jowar roti and you have done it so nicely. Kudoos to you. I am opposite of you, I struggle to get my roti in any other shape except the circle..

  7. Very interesting combination PJ..adding all those peppers must have made this roti so tasty!..I mostly make circle rotis..but sometimes triangle turns out to the pick..I guess for each one it also differs how the shape looks!
