One of the main and my favorite plant in my backyard is the Drumstick Tree. The tree is in full bloom now. We are having our fill of drumsticks .A whole bunch of flowers are getting wasted when they fall on the ground as we are experiencing heavy winds….

One of the branches bends over our balcony so I though I will pluck a
handful of these flowers and put them to use in a recipe instead of
watching them dry up on the ground. Thus was born Murungapoo rasam in my
kitchen a few months back.
This time I picked up the flowers to make dhal. The picky eaters at home never knew the addition of these flowers and ate without complaint.

The flowers of the wonder plant that has the Scientific name – Moringa Oleifera has the following health benefits…

  • Drumstick flowers are said to prevent frequent infection of throat and chest.
  • Rich source of Vitamin and Minerals.

I used:
Drumstick flowers – 1 cup, packed -Wash and pat dry. Keep aside till required.
Toor dhal- 1/2 cup
Tomato-1
Onion-1
Garlic- 2 pods
Ginger-1″ Piece
Green chilli – 1
Turmeric powder- 1/8 teaspoon
Sambar powder- 1 teaspoon
Curry leaves- a few
Mustard seeds- 1 teaspoon
Cumin seeds- 1 teaspoon
Oil-1 teaspoon
Ghee – 1 teaspoon
Salt to taste

1. Heat ghee in a pan and add the drumstick flowers. Saute for a few minutes till the flowers shrink.Keep aside

2.Cut the tomato into two piece. Pressure cook the dal and the tomato with enough water till the dal is mushy, around 15 minutes / 3 hisses. Mash the dal and tomato well . Cut the onions, garlic, ginger.

3.Heat oil in a pan and put in the mustard and cumin seeds. When the seeds crackle, put in the onion, garlic, ginger, curry leaves, green chilies.Saute till the onions are soft.

4.Put in the mashed dal, turmeric powder, sambar powder and mix well.

5.Add salt and more water if needed.Put in the sauteed flowers and bring to a boil.Simmer for 5 minutes and remove from heat.

Serve with steamed rice…..

Note:

  • Instead of toor dal, moong dal can also be used.
  • It is best if you saute the flowers in ghee.
  • Instead of sambar powder, red chilipowder can also be used.

This dal pairs well with a tangy stew / Puli kuzhambu / Gojju…

And here is our meal….

Drumstick flowers are a good source of Iron and dal is a rich source of protein. These two are very essential for kids, especially when they are involved in sports activities. So this goes to Pradnya who is hosting Srivalli’s Kid’s delight event with the theme Nutritional food for growing sports enthusiasts, food supplements cleverly masked .And this is the theme I have taken up for  Blogging marathon # 34, week #2

This also goes to my favorite event – Cooking with Herbs and Flowers hosted here…
