There was a time when Idli was Lil Angel’s favorite dish! She used to eat it 3 times a day without complaint. I used to wish that she would ask for something different. But, she adamantly stuck to mini Idlis. Then I thought I will try out some variations in the idli and found this one in Rak’s Kitchen. I changed it a bit to suit her taste.

She did like this one and I used to make it for her when she came back from school. She did not even want a side dish when such dishes were served. She happily munched them down when if she knew that it was prepared with idli!

I serve these as an after school snack.Sometimes it also becomes a meal if she is very hungry. Since she goes to bed early if she is tired, I am not too worried coz this is quite filling as well.

This is also a blessing in disguise to use up the idlis that were made in the morning!

This goes to the Blogging Marathon #40, Week 1 with the theme – Evening Snacks…

I used:
Adapted from – Rak’s kitchen

Left of Idli -3
Capsicum-1,small, chopped
Onion-1, small,sliced
Garlic-2 pods,sliced
Tomato-2, chopped
Pav bhaji masala-1 teaspoon
Cumin seeds- 1 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Oil- to deep fry
Coriander leaves to garnish

  1. Refrigerate the idli .Cut them into small cubes.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add the idli cubes and deep fry till golden brown. Remove with a slotted ladle and keep aside.
  3. In another pan, heat 2 teaspoons of oil and add teh cumin seeds.
  4. When it splutters, add the onion, garlic and capsicum and saute till onion turns translucent.
  5. Add the tomato and cook till it is soft.
  6. Add the salt and pav bhaji masala and mix well.
  7. Add 1/4 cup of water and cook for another 2 minutes.
  8. Add the fried idli cubes and mix well so that the masala coats the idlis and cook till the mixture is dry.
  9. Remove from heat and serve garnished with coriander leaves, with a chutney / raita

Note:

  • The idli absorbs less oil when refrigerated and then fried. It also helps retain the shape and avoids sticking to the bottom of the kadai/pan while frying them.
  • You can also add chili powder and coriander powder in step – 6
  • Tomato sauce can also be added in step -7
  • Veggies like parboiled peas, carrots etc can be added

Bon Appetit …
