Little Millet [Samai] Sambar Sadham Recipe

The classic one pot meal made with millets! It is healthy and an absolute comfort food!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Samai / Little millet
  • 1/2 cup Toor Dal
  • 2 cups Mixed vegetables,chopped
  • 1/8 cup Raw Peanuts
  • 1/2 cup Sambar Onions / shallots
  • 1 number Tomato , chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Channa Dal
  • 1 teaspoon Urad dal
  • A few curry leaves
  • 2 numbers Red chilies
  • 2-3 teaspoons Sambar powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup Tamarind extract- adjust to taste
  • 4 - 4 1/2 cups Water

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add mustard, cumin seeds, chana dal and urad dal and saute .

  2. Once the mustard pops,add curry leaves, red chili,peanuts. Saute for a minute and add the shallots. 

  3. After a minute add the mixed vegetables and tamarind extract.

  4. Add sambar power, turmeric powder,salt and mix well. Then and the tomato and water.

  5. Put in them millet and the dal,mix and bring to a boil.

  6. Cover and pressure cook for 4-5 whistles / till done. Once the pressure releases, remove the lid, give it a stir and serve.

Recipe Notes

  • If you want it more gooey[that's the way it should be], add more water, else decrease the quantity of water used.
  • Use any vegetables like carrot, peas, potato , cauliflower, peas,fresh toor,hyacinth beans soaked channa/ kidney beans etc.
  • Tastes best when served hot drizzled with a generous dose of ghee.
  • Use sambar onions / shallots for the perfect taste.
  • Adjust the quantity of tamarind extract based on how tart it is. The dish should have a mild tartness and not too sour.
  • Similarly adjust the quantity of sambar powder based on how mild / spicy you want to dish to be.
