Thakkali Adai | Tomato Adai Recipe

A simple and healthy breakfast dish from South India

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Rice
  • 1/4 cup Urad dal
  • 1/4 cup Toor dal
  • 1/4 cup Moong dal
  • 1/4 cup Masoor dal
  • 1/4 cup Channa dal
  • 4 numbers Ripe Tomatoes
  • 1 number Onion Chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • A few Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Take rice , lentils of your choice and red chilies in a bowl and soak it in plenty of water.Cover and keep aside overnight or for at least 5-6 hours.

  2. Drain the water and take some of it in a mixie jar. Add ripe tomatoes and grind to a smooth batter. Transfer into a bowl. Now grind the remaining mixture, adding little water .Do not make a runny batter, it has to be a little thicker than dosa batter.

  3. Add salt, curry leaves, chopped onions and cumin seeds. Mix well

  4. Heat a griddle and pour a ladle full of batter in the center and spread it to a circle. Cook on both sides.

  5. Serve with a side of your choice.

Recipe Notes

  • Use any lentils of your choice. 
  • Millets can replace rice.
  • Add juicy, ripe tomatoes.
  • Sometimes I add a piece of ginger while grinding the batter.
