Urad Dal Murukku Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Urad Dal See note
  • 2 cups Rice Flour See note
  • 2 tsp Melted butter
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Red chili powder
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl take rice flour, urad dal, red chili powder, salt, cumin seeds and mix well.

  2. Add the melted butter and mix

  3. Add water little by litter and to make a pliable dought that is too too wet/sticky/dry.

  4. Heat oil for deep frying.

  5. Take a murukku press and put in either a tenguzhal plate[one with just the holes] or the one with the star

  6. Great the murukku press and plate

  7. Take a portion of the dough and press out the murukku into the hot oil or on a greased ladle and slip it gently the hot oil

  8. Keep the oil in medium flame and fry the murukku in batches

  9. Once the murukku turns golden brown, remove from the oil.

  10. Store in an airtight container after it cools completely

Recipe Notes

  • Store-bought homemade urad dal and rice flour can be used.
  • Instead of melted butter, hot oil can be used.
  • Sesame seeds can be used instead of cumin seeds
  • The oil should not be too hot. Keep adjusting the temperature of the oil as you fry in batches.
  • To check if the oil is at the right temperature, drop a piece of dough into the oil. If it rises up immediately, you can start making the murukku.
