Malabar Avil Milk Recipe with step by step pictures

When I first read the name of the dish, I was intrigued! I wondered how one could make a milkshake with Poha / Aval / Pressed rice! Then curiosity got the better of me and I made it one afternoon. Just one serving to check if it would taste good as I had a huge doubt on how the texture would turn out!  And then when I made it and tasted it after clicking a few pics, I found my fears and doubts melt away and I now can say that this is one of the best drinks I have tasted in a while!!!

I was looking up some unique recipes that use poha/ rice flakes and that is when I landed on this drink that is supposed to be very famous in the Malabar region.

Each reference I looked up mentioned that it is a famous drink from the Malabar region of Kerala. It is sold in most of the shops there and is made of Avil or rice flakes/ poha, bananas, roasted peanuts, and milk.

This drink has to be served as soon as it is made so that you can enjoy the beverage with the crunchy texture of the pressed rice. Once the Avil / poha gets soggy, I am sure it would not taste nice. Also, the roasted peanuts impart such a delicious crunch and taste to the drink. Try it out and I can guarantee that you will fall in love with it!

This awesome drink is for Week 2, Day 6 of the Mega Blogging Marathon #68 themed Cooking Carnival. Do check out the other recipes with this Iron-rich ingredient – recipes with Aval

I used:

Poha / pressed rice- 2 tablespoons
Banana – 1 small
Chilled Milk-150 ml
Sugar- 1/2 teaspoon
Roasted peanuts- 1 tablespoon
Ghee- 1 teaspoon

Heat ghee in a pan and add the peanuts and fry till they turn golden brown. Drain and keep aside.
To the same pan, add the poha and roast it till the poha turns crisp but it should not char.

In a bowl take a banana and mash it with the back of a spoon.[Do not puree it in a mixie]. Add sugar to it and mix

Take a serving glass and put in the mashed banana. Top it up with a tablespoon of roasted poha. Add half of the fried peanuts.

Add milk and serve garnished with the remaining poha and peanuts.

A deliciously crunchy beverage is ready to be savored…

Bon Appetit…
