This Kollu Karuveppilai Podi recipe / Horsegram, Curry leaves and Lentil spice mix is a recent favorite at home!

I got a small pack of horsegram to use in making spice mixes as they are my kids favorite to have with steaming hot rice or as a side with idli ,dosa and even with chapathi!

Our curry leaf plant grew really tall and bent in the process. So we trimmed it down and ended with a lot of curry leaves.

Almost every house in our neighborhood have a couple of curry leaves plants in their backyard so I did not know what to do with the huge lot.

I ended up storing some for later use and used most of it in making this spice mix.

I added a mix of lentils including horsegram and it was quite flavorful! This spice mix can be used as a side with Idli / Dosa like Idli Milagai podi but tastes best with Steamed rice drizzled with ghee / Sesame oil.

Here is how to prepare Kollu Karuveppilai Podi Recipe:

I used:

  • Kollu/ Horsegram – 1/2 cup
  • Curry leaves- 2 packed cups
  • Toor dal-1/4 cup
  • Channa Dal-1/4 cup
  • Moong Dal-1/4 cup
  • Peppercorns-1 teaspoon
  • Red chilies – 2 [adjust to taste]
  • Flax seeds- 1 tablespoon
  • Sesame seeds- 2 tablespoons
  • A pinch of asafoetida powder
  • Salt to taste

Here is how to prepare this healthy spice mix…

  1. Toast sesame seeds on low flame till they pop a bit. Keep aside.
  2. Dry roast all the lentils ,peppercorns and red chilies, together till they turn golden brown.Do this on low flame else the lentils will burn quickly.
  3. Switch off the heat and add flax seeds and toasted sesame seeds. Stir a couple of times and let it cool.
  4. Transfer onto a plate
  5. Now toast the curry leaves on very low flame so that it looses moisture and shrivels. The color will also change.
  6. Let it cool. The curry leaves will turn crisp.
  7. In a mixie jar, take the crisp curry leaves and powder well.
  8. To this add the lentil spice mix , a pinch of asafoetida and salt.
  9. Grind to a semi fine powder.
  10. Spread on a plate to cool down.
  11. Store in an airtight container
  12. Use this as a side with Idli / dosa or serve with steamed rice drizzled with ghee / sesame seed oil.
