Palani Panchamirtham Recipe with step by step instructions

Palani is a famous town in South India that is believed to be one of the abodes of Tamil God Lord Murugan. The temple is situated on a hillock and we have to either walk all the way up or take a winch train to reach there.

The ride is really thrilling as the winch train climbs up the steep hill and we also get to enjoy the scenic beauty.

The devotees who visit the temple are given Panchamirtham as prasadam [religious offering given to the devotees] .It is also sold outside in the numerous shops around the temple in boxes of all sizes.

Now, let me tell you a little about Palani Panchamirtham.

It is a combination of 5+ ingredients[pancha =5, amritham -divine nectar] .Banana, kandasari sugar [natural sugar],ghee, honey and cardamom. Dates, raisins, sugar candy[kalkandu] is also added.

Water / milk is not added yet a semi solid consistency is achieved by mashing these ingredients. It is like jam in consistency actually.

There are no preservatives as well.In spite of not adding preservatives, this does not spoil soon even if kept for longer periods in room temperature.

A type of banana called ‘Virupakshi’ is used in the making of this prasadam which is usually cultivated around the town.

And another interesting fact is that this panchamirtham is the first prasadam in Tamil Nadu to get a GI tag!

I used the temple website as reference to prepare this dish and tweaked it a little bit.
