Ridge-gourd Rice |Peerkangai Sadham Recipe with step by step pictures
This is a recipe that I tried from a Cookery show on TV. The original recipe was posted in Nov 2008 and I am updating this recipes with better pictures.
The rice dish was part of an event called Recipe Marathon which took place in 2008. I posted this along with 7 other rice dishes and sent this one to Srivalli’s event called Rice Mela.
The picture that I posted back then was not very good,a hurried click before I gobbled up the rice.I have been wanting to redo many of the old posts and doing them one by one.
I made this sometimes when we are bored of the regular ridge gourd in dal or the ridge gourd dosa, I make this rice with the veggie.
It is a nice and delicious dish that can be made pretty quickly. And even more helpful when you need to finish off the left over rice!
You need:
Ridge-gourd-1 cup[Peeled and chopped .Do not chop into very small pieces ].Reserve the peel. You can prepare chutney out of it.]
Onion -1 finely chopped
Tomato-1 finely chopped
Mustard-1 teaspoon
Jeera-1 teaspoon
Urad dhal-1/2 teaspoon
Gram dhal-1 teaspoon
Red chilies- 2,broken
Curry leaves-a few
Paruppu podi / ant lentil spice mix-1 teaspoon
Chili powder- 1/2 teaspoon
Turmeric powder-1/8 teaspoon
Oil-2 teaspoons
Salt to taste
Rice-1 cup cooked[grains should be separate / use left over rice]
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard, cumin, urad dal and chana dal. After a few seconds, add the red chilies and curry leaves.Once the dal turns brown, add the onion and cook till soft. Now put in tomato. When the tomato is mushy add the ridge-gourd
Add very little water, cover and cook for a few minutes till the raw smell disappears from the ridge-gourd and it is cooked. Add turmeric powder, chili powder, salt.
Mix well and if there is extra water, cook uncovered till the mixture is almost dry. Now add the cooked rice, paruppu podi and mix. Cook for a few minutes for the flavors to blend.
Serve hot with raita or crispies .
This dish is for Blogging Marathon #85, Week 4, Day 1 with the theme, redoing old posts with new pictures.
