This month for the Eggless baking group decided to bake dinner rolls suggested by Priya of Enveetu Kitchen.
Dinner rolls are what is known as ‘Pav Buns’ here. They are soft and are a perfect snack with tea.
We had a whole month to bake but owing to the frequent power cuts and Lil Angel’s exams and then her summer hols, etc, kept me engaged always.
Finally, this morning I decided to put aside all the reasons and set to baking. While and after kneading the dough, the power was cut and I was so upset. Luckily, the power supply was restored within an hour and I was able to finish the dinner rolls.
Initially I had planned to prepare plain ones and then prepare Pav bhaji but Lil Angel wanted the chocolate rolls I had prepared for for Hokkaido Milk Bread. So it was decided to make chocolate filled ones. I made 8 rolls with chocolate filling and 4 plain ones…
I used the recipe from Maayeka and it turned out great except for the ‘browning on top’ part. I am still wondering why….
I used :
All Purpose Flour – 3.5 cups
Instant dry yeast – 3 teaspoons
Sugar – 2 tablespoons
Salt -3/4 teaspoons
Milk – 3/4 teaspoons
Butter – 4 tablespoons
Luke warm water – 1/2 cup
Luke warm milk – 3/4 cup
- In a bowl take the water, yeast, sugar and a pinch of salt. Mix and keep aside till frothy.
- In another bowl, mix the butter and milk.
- In a larger bowl, take the flour and salt.
- Add the two liquids [yeast mixture and milk mixture] and knead well to get a sticky dough.[I used a food processor and while I was kneading the power went off , so did the remaining kneading by hand. Surprisingly, the dough was not very sticky!]. The more you knead the softer is the rolls.
- Oil the dough thoroughly and place in an oiled bowl. Cover with a wet cloth and keep aside in a warm place till it doubles in size.I left it for an hour.
- Punch out the dough and divide into 12 pieces.
- Take a ball of dough and flatten it lightly and place a piece of chocolate in the centre[I used Cadbury’s chocolate pieces] and bring in the edges and close the ball and roll it between your palms to a smooth circle.
- Repeat for the remaining dough pieces.
- Place the balls on a greased tray a little apart and cover with a wet cloth and keep aside for 30 minutes or till it doubles.
- Brush the top of the rolls with milk.
- Bake in a pre heated oven at 180 degree C for 20 minutes till the top is beautifully brown in colour.
- Remove from the oven, let it cool and serve.
And here are the plain ones…
I really enjoyed baking and eating these rolls. It is a great recipe. Will be trying this with other fillings…
Bon Appetit…
