Summer has begun in our part of the world and it is already unbearable. Coupled with the frequent and unscheduled power cuts, life is becoming miserable. Some things that helps us keep cool and make the summer bearable are the summer special fruits and vegetables.
Watermelon is a favorite of the majority along with tender coconut water. Another thing that we love is this Nungu….
Nungu is known by the names – Asian Palmyra Palm,Toddy palm, Sugar Palm, Ice Apple and Cambodian Palm. Borassus flabellifer is its Botanical name.
The fruits are found in clusters and are black in color. When the top portion is cut off, 3 soft translucent, jelly like fruits are reviled. This is scooped out and the hard outer portion is removed the jelly like fruit is consumed.
If the outer part[brown color] is not mature, it can be consumed without removing it. Here is a close up pic….
Come summer, one can see many vendors with bunches of ice apple for sale and a big crowd around him.
This person also sells pathaneer, which is a drink collected from the cut out palm. When consumed as soon as it is collected, this juice is of extremely cooling nature. When this is allowed to ferment it becomes toddy, an alcoholic beverage.
When ever possible, hubby brings home nungu. Usually we eat it as such. Last week when he got this, I prepared a few ‘fancy’ dishes .
The first one is the rose milk nungu which is very easy to prepare and tastes excellent.
Take 2 cups of chilled milk and mix in 4 teaspoons of rose milk powder. Chop 2 nungu finely after removing the outer brown portion and add to the rose milk.Serve immediately.
The next one is the kesar badam nungu . This also tastes extremely good….
Add 4 teaspoons of MTR Badam mix[or any other badam milk ready mix] to chilled milk and add 2 chopped nungu to it. Serve immediately…
Though the nungu tastes good on its own, we loved these variations. A perfect and inexpensive way to take on the summer heat….

I was introduced to this fruit which in Marathi is called "tad gole" after my marriage. I love the fruit and i simply pretend that I cannot peel them and my hubby's cousins etc peel them and give me. I end up eating the most of these.:) LOL. Love the idea of rose milk .
I remember eating these (we call them munjelu in Telugu) way back when in my grandma's town. Loved your fancy versions-they sound delicious.
