It is funny to note how most of the recipes that I post here come into being. It either that I have a certain ingredient that needs to be used up or it is because I need to make a new dish just to put it up on the blog!I need not have to tell you that when ever I set my eyes on a new ingredient or when a foodie friend gifts me a certain ingredient,I start cooking with it the very next day! All this is not new if you are a food blogger, right!
This recipe, however, was cooked as I had to use up what was remaining after I made the Shorbat Adas,a Jordanian soup. The box of lentil lay hidden behind the other boxes of dals / lentils that were frequently used. While cleaning the shelves last month, I saw this box of masoor dal and I assumed that it would not be good after all these months. But I was wrong!
So,in order to use up the lentils, I made this simple gravy to go with the Garlic naan
This super easy gravy goes to Blogging Marathon #54,Week 2, Day 1 , with the theme Lentils-3 ways…
I used:
Whole masoor dhal- 1 cup
Onion-1,sliced
Tomato-1, chopped
Cumin seeds- 1 teaspoon
Turmeric powder- 1/8 teaspoon
Kitchen king masala- 1 1/2 teaspoons
Kasuri methi-1/2 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Oil- 1 teaspoon
Wash and soak the lentil for an hour.Drain and put it into a pressure cooker with 2 cups of water. Pressure cook for 15 minutes/ till done. You can also cook it on the stove top, but it will take longer to cook in a pan.Mash the dal lightly while still hot and keep aside
Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. When it splutters, add onion ans saute till brown.Add tomato and cook till mushy. Add 1/2 cup of water, turmeric powder and kitchen king masala.
Add salt and mix well and let it simmer for 5 minutes.Put in the cooked dal and mix well.Simmer for another 5 minutes. Add kasuri methi and remove from heat.
Serve with a main of your choice….I served it with Garlic naan
