I had to run an errand yesterday. I left home around 12 noon and it was blazing hot outside. Technically, we still have time until summer sets in but the climate here has been very hot for the past few weeks!

So, by the time I returned home, I lost my appetite and craved for something refreshing to drink. Nothing sweet, something salty- said my body. It’s best not to argue with the mind and as it was I was not in a mood to make anything elaborate!

Then I remembered seeing push carts with ‘cooling’ beverages all around the city. Now that summer has arrived way ahead of schedule, push cart vendors have a roaring business selling Kambu Koolz[pearl millet porridge],Ragi koozl[Finger millet porridge],Rose milk , flavored buttermilk etc.e

Huge earthen pots hold the beverage and surrounding it is an array of side dishes for the porridge like fried crisps, pickle, buttermilk , fried sun dried chilies etc.I have never tasted the goods sold in those carts but I never fail to take a peek on what is present inside it!

I was too lazy to make the porridge so I made a flavored buttermilk with cucumber and mint.

Cucumber and Mint Flavored Buttermilk
Serves – 2
I used:

Chilled Yogurt- 1/2 cup
Chilled Water- 2 cups
Cucumber- 1 medium sized
Mint leaves- a fistfull
Black salt-1/4 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Chili powder- a pinch to sprinkle on top

Take all the ingredients[except the chili powder] in a blender jar and blend well.

Serve immediately sprinkled with a pinch of chili powder.

Note:

  • You can alter the ratio of the ingredients to suit you taste.

  1. This is such a refreshing drink and addition of cucumber is an added bonus for cooling down the body. Winter has not left us yet but last couple of days were more like early summer in out neck of the woods. I totally enjoyed the warm weather staying out most of the day.
