Moving on from the Indian cooling cucumber and mint flavored buttermilk, I am now taking you to Thailand to taste one of their street food. Yes, another beverage…

This thai basil drink is sold on the street sides, especially during summer. I have another version of this drink which is also called Nam Mengluck which uses rose syrup for flavoring. When I was looking around for the other recipe, I found a couple of variations and had bookmarked this. This version uses rose essence for flavoring and honey as the sweetener.

I used:

Basil seeds- 1/8 teaspoon
Rose Essence- a drop
Chilled Water- 200 ml
Honey to taste
Ice cubes

Soak the basil seeds in 1/2 cup water and set aside for half an hour for it to ‘bloom’

Take water in a glass and mix in honey.Transfer to a serving glass [or use the same one] and add teh swelled up basil seeds, essence.

Serve immediately with ice cubes and a sprig of mint / basil.

Note:

  • I used just a drop of essence as it is quite strong. You can add based on the strength and flavor of the essence you are using.
