Jamun fruits are in season now! Yay! It is one of my favorites! Taking this fact into account, I got a kilo and tried out some recipes with it! The first one is this Jamun Fruit Juice Recipe.
This juice is available from leading brands but the fresh one is always the most preferred one, right!
Before I go on to this recipe,let me tell you a little about this wonder fruit!
Jamun fruit is also called Black Plum / Java Plum. Locally [in tamil] it is called Nagaa Palzham / Naaval palzham. Other names include Jambolan, Neredu, Nerale, Jambul, Jamali.
It comes from the tree Syzygium cumini .This tree is native to the Indian subcontinent and its adjoining regions. It is said to have spread to the other countries through Indian emigrants.
It is in season during summer and has numerous health benefits.It has a slightly sweet taste with sour and astringent undertones.
Let’s see the health benefits of this fruit. Due to its astringent property, it keeps the skin clear and free from acne. It has anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties. It is said to be good for Diabetics. It is loaded with Potassium and is rich in Vitamin A and C.It is also a good source of anti oxidants and flavinoids.
Even the seeds are used in the treatment of diabetes in Ayurvedic and Sidha Medicine.
With so many benefits to boost, we try to have as many of these as possible when in season.Here the price ranges from INR 80-120 per kilo.
Usually we eat it as is, but this time, I wanted make some dishes out of it and my experiments lead me to prepare 4-5 recipes with this fruit! Will post them one by one.
Here is how to prepare Jamun Fruit Juice Recipe
I used:
Jamun pulp- 1/4 cup
Chilled water- 2 cups
Jaggery powder – to taste
Black salt – a large pinch
- Blend all the ingredients together.
- Serve immediately.
Note:
- To get the pulp, scrape the pulp/fruit off the seed.
- You can use sugar / honey or any sweetener of your choice.
- The juice must still taste a bit sour/ astringent so use the sweetener judiciously.
- I served the juice as such without straining it.
A tasty drink prepared from Java plum / black plum that is loaded with goodness!
- 1/4 cup Jamun Fruit Pulp
- To taste Jaggery powder
- 2 cups Chilled Water
- Large Pinch Black Salt

Being Indian I grew up eating jamun as a kid. Those rich purple fruits are such a huge hit in summer. Almost all of us would be will purple tongues on the way back from school. This sounds so refreshing and light. Wish we got jamuns so far away from India.
