The Cookery Show and a Love Story by Sourabh Mukherjee is an extract from the author’s anthology – It’s All About Love. You can also read the review of the other short story A Special day which I posted earlier.
This is my second read by the author and I expected a nice story line just like the previous one I read. It is not disappoint me!!
The 19 paged book deals with love and compares the modern day love to the one in old age and keeping in line with the title the story revolves around a cookery show!
The cookery show ‘India Cooks’ by Master Chef Rajeev Roy unknowingly creates a discord in the Basu Household. That is the time when Rudra Prasad Basu and Nalini, the elderly couple argue about why that show should be viewed.
While Nalini meticulously notes down the recipes, Basu shows his disapproval while the son and daughter in law take sides in supporting the elderly couple.
Jay, the grandson is eagerly waiting for Valentines day to take his girlfriend out for dinner. He has spent whatever little he had saved for a present and is looking forward to meeting her.
But tragedy strikes on Feb 14 when Nalini has a cerebral attack. She is admitted in the hospital and the situation is tense.Jay is unable to meet Tina and in spite of explaining his situation Tina assumes otherwise and ends the relationship by going out with Dev, the other guy who is competing against Jay to win over Tina!!
Dev returns home from the hospital and is heart broken over Tina. Her harsh words hurts him and lot.He realizes that love is never unconditional and shed tears.
Nalini’s favorite show starts on TV and what grandpa does proves that love is never conditional!
The language is simple and is a quick read. So many instances in this book are relatable to events in real life, something that we have seen / heard of.
The cover of the book is so beautiful and very apt for the story line.
The difference in ‘love’ between teenagers and the elderly is portrayed so well! Most of the times, youngsters often value relationships in terms of money, gifts and places they go out for dinner but the elderly on the other hand, though they seem to fight or argue most of the times, the true love is in their heart and it can be felt by their actions rather than their words.
My recommendation:
If you are looking for a short and sweet read go for this book. You will enjoy it!
