Typically, Kozhukattai is a dish that is made as an offering for Ganesh Chathurthi. But the savory varieties are also served as a tea time snacks and this one is one such.
In the second week on Indian Sweets and snacks series, we are doing snacks from a state of our choice and I have chosen Tamil nadu.
This snack is made with a dough if rice flour that is seasoned and then made into dumplings and steamed. It tastes good with a nice spicy tomato onion chutney.
Also check out the other Kozhukattai varieties I have posted earlier…

Here is how to prepare this healthy snack
I used:
- Processed Rice Flour – 1 cup
- Water-2 cups
- Oil- 2 teaspoons
- Mustard- 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds- 1/2 teaspoon
- Channa dal- 1 teaspoon
- Curry leaves- a few
- Broken red chilies- 4-5 pieces
- Salt to taste
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin, channa dal. Saute.
- When the mustard pops, add curry leaves and red chili pieces.
- Add water and salt to taste and bring it to a rolling boil.
- Add the rice flour slowly sprinkling it and keep mixing while adding so that there are no lumps.
- Keep stirring on simmer and cook till the mixture forms a single mass.
- Remove from heat and keep aside
- When still warm yet not too hot to handle, grease the palms and shape into oblong dumplings.[I have shaped them into thin finger like dumplings]
- Meanwhile heat water in a steamer.Place the dumplings on a steamer plate and cook for 5 minutes / till they turn a bit glossy. So not overcook.
- Remove from steamer and serve with a spicy side.
Note:
- Do not over steam the dumplings. It will become rubbery.
- Grated carrot, coconut, onion can be sauteed before adding water in step 3.
