Here is an authentic side dish from Kerala for our weekend breakfast. But let me warn you, this is definately not for the ‘faint-hearted’.
I got this recipe from Nags of Edible Garden. The moment I saw it I knew for sure that this would be the side-dish that people at home would surely love. Mil and hubby were totally impressed with this chutney as they love spicy food and this went very well with our breakfast.
Nags says that name ‘Chuttaracha chamanthi’ means roasted and ground chutney and is also called ‘Chutta Mulaku Chammanthi’
Grated Coconut – 1/4 cup
Dried red chillies – 10
onion – 1,small,chopped
Garlic – 2 cloves
Coriander powder – 1 tsp
Tamarind extract- 1 tablespoon
Salt – to taste
1. Heat a non-stick pan and roast the red chillies dry (without oil) till it reaches the stage just before burning.[It will be smoky so don’t forget to switch on the exhaust!]
2. Add the coconut, chopped onion, garlic and coriander powder and roast for another 2 minutes or till the onion is transparent.Remove from heat.
3. Cool and grind this mixture along with salt and tamarind using very little water.
Serve with a breakfast of your choice.
