Kadale Bele Sundal Recipe with step by step pictures
Kadalai paruppu / Kadale Bele is channa dal. Sundal is an easy protein packed snack made by cooking channa dal and tempering it with some spices.
This is one of the dishes that get done during Navrathri festival as a Neivedhyam to the Goddess.
In my place, this gets done often, as a snack with coffee or as a snack in the kids snack box. Though we make this often, I have never posted the dish here. Since the theme this month is protein rich, I felt it will be apt to post this now.
Generally, we don’t add onion to this dish. Grated ginger is added to give a nice flavor and it helps in digestion too. I soak the dal for about half an hour so that it cooks faster. Sometimes, when I am running out of time, I add hot water to the dal before pressure cooking it.
Step by step method to prepare Kadale Bele Sundal Recipe
Soak channa dal for half an hour and drain and discard the water. Add water and pressure cook for 2-3 whistles / till just done. The dal must be cooked, yet have a bite to it.
Drain the water and use it in dals / soups. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard, urad dal ,grated ginger, curry leaves and asfoetida powder. When the mustard pops, add the cooked dal and mix well.
Add salt and grated coconut and give it a mix.

Wow I seriously love this sundal PJ..one of my favorite ones to collect during Navratri..lol
Yummy Sundal .. Even i have prepared the same for this Mega Marathon.. My post will be up some time in the coming days!!
I smiled the moment I saw the post. It’s good to hear and read the kannada words. ๐ With golu season coming up, this is a great share.
I have never tried Sundal. It looks so simple yet interesting with coconut.
This is my favourite sundal and brings back memories of golu during my childhood when we would visit all the neighbours’ houses and Sundal would be dinner. Your Sundal looks just rightly cooked with the bite and not mashed up. Yum
I must try these sundals , I always land up making these as North Indian chaats with chat masala and lemon juice !
I never use pressure cooker for this sundal, as I always cook it into a mushy paste. Kudos to you to have made it so good in pressure cooker. Tell me about the secret when we meet next.
Sundals I have read so many times but not dared to prepare. This one seems simple enough for me to prepare.
u r lining up stuff for navaratri ๐ i also use the pressure cook to make this real fast. I also make it with some ginger on non-festival days to give it a zing and for easy digestion too.
Nice share for the upcoming Navarathri, looks simple and absolutely delicious.
Simply superb, who will say no to this nutritious sundal. Prefect tea time snacks.
Sundal was an everyday dish at my place since my younger brother would eat only that as a side dish to the rice. Chana dal never made it to the everyday list, but still would be prepared for the pooja time.
This is a nutritious snack. I luv to make this in coconut oil. Coconut oil and Channa dal goes well with each other and they taste really good.
I have been thinking about making this aundal for quite some time now. My mom used to make this for every navarathiri..
