This Vegetable Varagu Semiya Upma Recipe is one of the easiest yet a very healthy dish to try for breakfast.
Varagu or kodo millet is a grain that I have been using for quite some time along with the other millets. A few months back, I saw the ready to cook semiya/ string hopper sin the organic millet shop that I visit often. Since I was not sure how the taste would be, I got just one pack to try.
The method is very simple- steam and season it / steam and add jaggery and coconut and serve.
I decided to add vegetables and make it similar as the semiya / vermicelli upma. The taste was good and Lil Angel ate it without a fuss. Lil guy however did not even want to taste it as he said the color was dark so it wont be tasty! What an inference!!!

This is one of the most easiest way to include millets into our regular diet where we don’t have too much of work to get it done!
Step by step method to prepare Vegetable Varagu Semiya Upma Recipe
Empty a packet[200grams] of kodo millet sticks into a bowl. Add water and let it soak for 5 minutes. Drain and transfer into a colander / steamer plate.Steam for 5 minutes / till done. Do not steam for too long as it will tun mushy. Once done, remove from steamer and let it cool. Once it comes to room temperature, fluff it up with a fork and keep aside.
Heat oil in a pan and a teaspoon of mustard seeds,1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds,1 teaspoon channa dal,1 teaspoon urad dal and a few red chilies, broken. Once the dal turns brown, add 1 chopped onion, a few curry leaves and saute till the onion turns soft. Now add a cup of boiled vegetables. I used carrot, beans and green peas.
Saute for a minute and add the cooked millet sticks and add salt. Mix gently and remove from heat
Serve with a side of your choice.
