Karacha Maavu Dosai | Instant Dosai Recipe with step by step instructions
After a long time I am back to posting recipes on the blog. We had planned for a month long Thali mela this month but due to the sudden turn of events, we have changed the theme to a later date.
I always felt that when I am free I will be able to post more on the blog. And the lock down came which made me think I can do some clean up work as well on the blog.
With the kids and hubby at home, it may seem that we have a lot of time at hand but in reality there is hardly any time to do anything else other that cooking and cleaning the house!
Today is lock-down day #17 and though it is nice and feels safer to stay at home, we feel a little stressed looking at the events going on around us. We all know staying indoors is for the greater good and hence the kids are more than complaisant to play in the portico and spend their time playing board games .
Actually the hardest task for me is planning the day’s menu. Most of the days we have stock of Idli batter but that too got a bit monotonous! The next one on the menu would be poori, chapathi, adai ,upma and pongal.
But when all that is exhausted, this easy breezy instant dosa comes to the rescue. It works well when we don’t have the regular dosa batter or when we are not in a mood to cook anything elaborate.
I made this one night a few days ago as we were lazying around and all of a sudden it was dinner time! So I decided to experiment on this dosa . It came out better than expected and the best thing was it was prepared the next day too on popular request!
So here is the instant dosa or karacha maavu dosa recipe. Karacha maavu literally means mixing flours together. You can use any flours that you have in the pantry.
This Karacha Maavu Dosai | Instant Dosai Recipe is very forgiving. The measurements don’t matter much and the dosa comes out well every time! This tastes best with a spicy tomato-onion chutney but can also be served with sambar / coconut chutney.
The picture doesn’t do justice to the taste. I was too lazy to do a proper set up for the pic. Its been ages since I took out the props and I’m not even sure where I stored them! So this mediocre pic for now. I might update this on a late date.

Here is how to prepare Karacha Maavu Dosai | Instant Dosai Recipe
I used:
- Whole wheat flour- 1 cup
- White Rava- 1/2 cup
- Besan- 1/2 cup
- Onion-1 ,large, finely chopped
- Coriander leaves- a handful, finely chopped
- Cumin seeds- 1 teaspoon
- Salt to taste
Method:
- In a bowl, take the flours and add salt.
- Mix well
- Add water and prepare a lump free batter.[ I used a whisk and using a whisk works really well than using a ladle to mix.]
- Add the onion, coriander and cumin seeds.Mix well.
- Let it rest for 10 minutes / till you prepare chutney.
- Heat a dosa pan and pour the batter like we do for rava dosa.
- Cover and cook for a few seconds.
- Carefully flip it over and cook on the other side too.
- Serve immediately with a side of your choice.
Note:
- Add water little by little and whisk well
- This batter should be thinner than the regular dosa batter. It should be like Rava dosa batter.
- You can also add ragi flour, bajra flour etc.
The dosa looks great ! I do make a similar one – the only difference is that I do not add besan ! These dosas are our morning breakfasts ,and we really enjoy them . The next time I will try with besan .

Lockdown is definitely playing on our nerves. But we are all resilient and will get over it soon. These dosas look very tempting. Shall try this combo one of these days.
I do use wheat flour alone or wheat flour and rava. Never tried adding besan. Next time will try this combo. Instant dosa is time saver on busy mornings.
