The second thali in the Thalis and Platters series is this simple weekday lunch that is simple and easy to prepare and yet looks like you put in a lot of effort to prepare this meal.
Featured in this simple thali are
- Steamed rice
- Simple Vegetable Rice
- Chinna Vengaya Sambar / Shallots Sambar
- Kandanthippili Rasam
- Quick beans curry
- Carrot Salad
- Curd
In this meal, the simple vegetable rice can also double up as the lunch menu that is to be packed for the kids and vice versa.
For sambar, we generally use the sambar powder that we prepare once a fortnight. But sometimes we use the freshly roasted and ground masala paste . The taste and the consistency of the sambar increases several folds when the fresh masala is used. I will post that recipe someday but until then this simple and delicious shallots sambar is the new recipe of the day.
Kandanthippili is Indian long pepper and a spice with several medicinal properties. It is usually available at the local herbal medicine shops or Naatu Marundhu Kadai.
The Quick Beans curry is flavored with Kholapuri masala and it tastes so good! This masala was a part of the BM meet goodies bag that one of our BM buddies shared with us. The homemade masala added so much deliciousness to the simple beans stirfry!
The carrot salad is a nice addition to this meal and is one of our favorites too.
Finally , the quintessential curd / yogurt that is a must with every lunch meal.I can never imagine a meal without curd! Homemade curd is so easy to prepare and is a probiotic that has numerous health benefits and one of the good sources of proteins and Calcium.
Hop over to the post of the day for the Chinna Vengaya Sambar recipe and I’m sure you will be tempted to try it out.

The rice and small onion sambar itself is a winner for us, the other dishes make it a feast than a meal ๐
I don’t go the extra mile with the rice dish for the everyday meal but your array looks like a mini thaali.
I am bookmarking this thali , my hubby always wants me to make simple thalis , but I am never able to do them . Now I will be able to make them with these bookmarked ones .
The meal looks delicious , and tempting !
We love such simple thalis and I make sure this is done for the sat meals…very well captured one PJ. The rasam is surely a new one for me as I have read about it, though yet to try my hands on it..will check out.
Love such homestyle comfort meals. This used to be the regular fare while growing up.
Perfect thali to enjoy during weekdays. As south Indian we almost make similar kind of thali everyday.
