Keerai Masiyal Recipe is a quick and simple addition to the lunch menu. Keerai is Greens and Masiyal is mash. So this is unassuming dish is so colorful and has the goodness of palak leaves and a flavorful seasoning of shallots and garlic. When in a hurry, this is the dish that will be both quick to make and healthy side to rice.


This dish can be prepared with palak or any greens of your choice. I always make this with palak as that is a family favorite.

Let’s see how to make Keerai Masiyal Recipe

Take the greens in a pan with water and add garlic and green chilies. Cover and simmer.

Once the leaves wilt / turn soft, drain and take in a mixie jar. Give it a whirl.

Heat oil in a small pan and mustard seeds, cumin. When it pops, add garlic, ginger, shallots. Saute till they turn light brown.

Take the mashed greens in a bowl , add salt and the seasoning on top.Mix well and serve with steamed rice.

A simple dish of mashed greens with a flavorful seasoning

Ingredients
  • 2 bunches Palak Greens, stalks removed
  • 2 no.s Green chilies
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 10 no.s Shallots / sambar oinion, finely chopped
  • 1 inch piece Ginger, chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
Instructions
  1. Take a pan with water and put in the palak greens, geen chilies and garlic.Cover and simmer

  2. Once the geens wilts / is soft, drain and take in a mixie jar

  3. Give it a whirl and transfer to a bowl.

  4. Heat oil in a small pan and mustard and cumin.

  5. When it pops, add ginger , garlic, shallots and saute till light brown.

  6. Pour over the mashed greens, add salt and mix well.

  7. Serve with steamed rice.

Recipe Notes
  • You can use any tender greens
  • Add more ginger / green chillies for a spicier version.

    This sounds simple and delicious! Love the green color of the masiyal. This is a different version than our masiyal and I would love to try this recipe soon.
