There was a time when I was breaking my head trying to figure out a combo dish that is both easy and delicious and to top it all, I did not want leftovers. I knew I was asking for too much but I needed a dish that fitted into all three critera.

I was looking for dishes from other countries and then I knew I could find a nice combo from India and then this combo just struck me.

Bonda and tea are typical dishes[if I may say so] that you can find in small eateries / bakeries/tea stalls around here. There are several Aavin milk outlets in our city that sell piping hot Bajji[vegetable fritters], Bonda and vadai[lentil fritters] along with a piping hot cup of tea.

So I thought, why not make a combo of there two !!It was easy to make, delicious and I was 100% sure there would be no leftovers! And was I right!!!

Though I chose a simple combo, I wanted a different recipe for both the dishes. I already have a bonda recipe in the blog, so then I saw many variations of bonda and making bonda with rice as a filling sounded so different.

Usually I don’t use a ready mix for bajji / bonda, but I have used it fort his dish.  You can use gram flour and rice flour in the ratio that you usually use.

I made this as an after school snack .There was a doubt if the kids will eat this.So I made the bajji as well so that the kids can eat what they preferred.

Lil Angel being adventurous went for the rice bonda, while Lil Dude preferred the Bajji as he is still switches of  the ‘adventurous mode’ at certain times!

This dish can be made with left over rice as well. It hardly takes 5 minutes to put the things together and within 10 minutes you will have a batch of piping hot snack ready!

I used:
Makes- 8 bondas

For the filling:
Cooked rice- 1 cup
Onion-1 small chopped
Coriander leaves- a handful,chopped
Chili powder- 1 teaspoon
Salt to taste

Instant bonda mix- 3/4 cup
Oil to deep fry

Take the ingredients mentioned under ‘ filling’ in a bowl and mix well. If the mixture is too dry, add a sprinkle water and make small balls out of it.

Take the bonda ready-mix in a bowl and add water little by little to make a batter of coating consistency.Meanwhile heat oil in a pan.Coat the rice balls with this batter. Drop the coated balls gently into the hot oil, bring down the heat to medium and fry till the bonda is golden brown in color. Drain and serve hot.

Tasty snack is ready to be savored!I served this with Kashmiri Pink Tea

Note:

  • The next time I make this bonda, I would saute the onions with salt and chili powder and then add to the rice.
  • If you coat the rice balls with a thick coating of the mix, it will be soft on the outside. A thin coating covering the rice balls will yield a crispy exterior.
  • You can also use gram flour, rice flour, salt and red chili powder to make the batter for bonda.
