Now, before you ask, let me tell you I too am still trying to figure out how to pronounce it and when I tried, I was not even sure if it was the right one!
So, here I am today posting a simple and humble dish that is one of the traditional breakfasts in Iceland. Breakfast dishes around the globe is the theme for week #4 in Blogging Marathon #56, I have started with this simple dish.
As a habit that is forming these days, I looked up for some easy breezy breakfast options and landed on this one. What else would I ask for!
This one had my favorite ingredient! Most of my friends call me ‘Oats Queen’ for the interest I show in cooking dishes with this lovely cereal. Now, I am not sure if the title
fits me but my interest on this nutritious grain in definitely growing. If you are interested in getting to know more about Oats and also want to try out some interesting recipes, check out this link.
But I must admit that I am not a huge fan of anything sweet for breakfast. Hubby always prefers oats porridge for breakfast that is sweetened. If I were to have oats ,then it would definitely be this savory oats porridge with buttermilk or the Masala oats porridge.
My idea was to make this porridge and hand it off to hubby to finish! When I read the method it was so similar to what I prepare everyday and with the garnish and stuff, I was sure it would be welcome.
You can read about the Icelandic cuisine here. For me just the term Iceland conjures up images of mothers waking up to prepare piping hot breakfast that are quick, easy and nourishing. In that way this porridge fits the bill…
I used:
Quick cooking Oats – 1/4 cup
Milk- 3/4 cup
Water- 1/2 cup
Topping / Garnish
Brown sugar
Raisins
Melon seeds
- Heat a pan and roast the oats for a minute.
- Add water and mix, taking care to see that there are no lumps.
- Add milk and cook[stirring in between] till oats is done. Increase / decrease the quantity of milk to suit the consistency of your choice.
- Make sure you serve it piping hot, with a sprinkle of brown sugar, some raisins and melon seeds. And if you like, you can also add a dollop of butter like the Icelanders do…
