But before that let me tell you something else first.

This is week two of the ‘Thalis and Platters Mela‘ that we are doing and this week I have chosen the theme – Flatbreads.

Dosas / Crepes , Naan, Roti type flatbread are all included in this theme and I decided to go with Dosas for this week. And its not just any Dosa but colorful dosa varieties that will surely seduce everyone’s eyes and taste buds!

Thos who know my Lil Dude, will know how much he detests eating vegetables! And the only way I get him to eat all that is by masking them in other dishes that he loves!So these types of dishes are always made not only to make the plate look colorful but also to get a little bit of nutrition for the lil one.

So the first in the series of Colorful Dosas is this Drumstick Leaves|Murunga Keerai Dosai Recipe.

I generally gring a handful of drumstick leaves along with some cumin and ginger and add to the dosa batter.

A couple of months ago the drumstick tree in our backyard got attacked by worms.We were lucky enough to have noticed it before it spread throughout the tree. We cut off almost all the branches and I collected leaves from the branches that was not infested.

I dried those leaves in the shade and gently roasted them on low flame and powdered it. The bright green color got retained and it looked so good. I store this in the fridge if I have a huge batch.

For this recipe,I added a little bit of that powder to the dosa batter to made these Dosas. The method is pretty straight forward isn’t it!!

I used:

  • Dosa batter – 2 cups
  • Drumstick leaves powder- 2 tbsp
  • Finely chopped onion- as needed
  • Idli podi – as needed.

Method:

  • Add the drumstick leaves powder to the dosa batter and mix well.
  • Spread the batter on a heated griddle.
  • When the bubbles appear on the surface, spread chopped onions and sprinkle the idli podi over it. Pat it well so that it sticks to the dosa.
  • After a couple of minutes,gently flip if over and cook for a minute.
  • Transfer it to a plate and serve immediately with a side of your choice.

Here we had it with brinjal sambar, coconut chutney,Idli podi and spicy garlic chutney.

  1. You are very lucky to have a drumstick tree in your backyard. And I am sure I would store the drumstick leaves in the powdered form if I had any excess (which is never :)) A wonderful idea to add that powder to dosa batter. Very inviting platter there.

  2. Harini is right, itโ€™s a blessing to have the tree in you our backyard. I am glad you were able to save the leaves and store it up. Podis are a convenient way to use it in a variety of recipes.

  3. Kids are fussy when it comes to their food , we all have to deal with this in different ways . I like what you do , the colourful dosa is a good way to feed the little dude , he gets his nutrition and you are a pleased mom .

  5. My little one is same as yours and I also grind every other vegetable and add to dosa, chapati etc. this looks so healthy and nutritious dosa with drumstick leaves.

  6. It’s easy to sneak in the veggies in these flatbreads easily naa. Great way to use the moringa leaves and the powder. I hope the tree can survive back. I have one in my backyard as well but in a small plant stage. Let’s see.

  7. I have grown in pot on 5th floor. It reached 7th floor and my husband cut it. It’s still growing from the stems. I eat the leaves ,raw sometimes.
