This simple Vazhakkai Porriyal |Raw Plantain Curry Recipe is a nice way to include this vegetable in our daily menu.


I love raw plantain chips or Upperi as we call it and it is one of my go to dishes if I have this veggie at home.

Preparing curry with raw plantain is not something I do often. And when I make it, it will be the grated and sauteed version.For a change I made this type of curry and to my surprise it tasted so good! I have been preparing curry this way for quite some time now.

This was actually cooked first and clicked in 2017! Yes, I was going through the folders and found these pics and thought will share them now. Not sure if this was from a bookmarked recipe or I just made it depending on the mood of the day!

Here is how to prepare Vazhakkai Porriyal |Raw Plantain Curry Recipe

Peel and cube the raw plantain.

In a pan boil water with turmeric powder and add the cubed plantain.Cover and cook on medium heat till it is cooked through but not mushy.Drain and keep aside.

Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds,urad dal, channa dal and curry leaves. Once the dal turns brown and mustard pops, add grated ginger ,the cooked plantain and mix.

Add salt, red chili powder, idli milagai podi and grated coconut. Mix well and cook on low for a few minutes and remove from pan.

Ingredients
  • 2 no.s Vazhakkai / Raw Plantain
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp Channa dal
  • A few Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 tsp Red Chili Powder
  • 3 tsp Idli milagai podi
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp Grated coconut
