Here is the first post for the Thali and Platter Mela ,about which I posted yesterday.
I used to take photos of the meal at home and never got around to posting them on the blog. These were taking for the Lunch Series that is on the blog. The whole of last year I hardly posted any recipes and the photos that I took got into the ‘Magic Folder’ to be used up when needed. Finally I got to use a few for this Mela!
The first thali is a simple weekend thali…
Featured here are
- Millet Bisi Bele Bhath
- Rice
- Cumin – Pepper Rasam
- Chow Chow Palya [dry curry]
- Buttermilk
- Onion Raita
- Masoor Dal Vadai [Lentil Fritters]
- Pappad / Appalam
- Vadumanga Oorugai [Baby mango pickle]
- Dates Sesame Ladoo
My daughter is a huge fan of Bisi Bele Bhath and I usually make it with rice. But then when I started using millets, I started using it instead of rice. There is no change in taste but just slight change in texture but that will not stop you from savoring this wonderful dish.
The new dish for the day is this Millet Bisi Bele Bhath recipe that I have posted today. Take a look at the recipe that we have been following for the past 4 generations!
The Bisi Bele Bhat has been paired with onion raita. Since this pair is heavy on its own, the rasam is made with cumin-pepper powder that aids digestion. Also I made this chow-chow curry that is a family favorite.
Weekends need to have something special and so there are a few vadas / fritters that I made using Masoor dal which taste so crunchy and are highly addictive!
The pappad / appalam and pickle are also part of this meal and these two feature on the menu on most of the weekends.
The Dates sesame seed ladoo is the dessert. Though we usually don’t have a dessert for weekend / weekday meal, I made it a part of this thali that was served on a weekend.
Now, if you have some time, hop over to the Millet Bisi Bele Bhath recipe post to see how this delicious dish is made. Here is a close up of the dish to tempt you…

Platter looks so inviting with so many dishes. BBB is favorite for my kids too and I also alternate with rice and millets. For me appalam and vadai is enough to enjoy this exotic meal.

Wow I wish I have a magical folder like that. It’s such an amazing thali and millet really works well in this kind of rice varieties. That’s one feast in my opinion.
