Lunch Series #23 – Simple Weekday Lunch #9

One of the most important appliance in my kitchen is the pressure cooker. I have around half a dozen cookers in various capacities and a pressure pan.

I love them so much that I pretty much cook everything from upma to fried rice, chutney to gravies in the pressure cooker itself. It saves a lot of time and reduces the need to stir often!

When we lived in China, I pretty much used to make the whole meal in pressure cookers. The climate was either too cold or too hot to stand for prolonged periods in the kitchen.

And to get the breakfast and lunch ready within an hour of waking up and that too with a toddler who will wake up as soon as you wake up, it was the pressure cooker that helped me finish cooking quickly.

And then comes the pan or the kadai! My mom is totally clueless as to why I have more than a dozen pan / kadai! I have everything from a small tadka pan to a huge kadai that can be used to cook sambar for a dozen people!I am crazy like that!!

Ceramic and stainless steel kadai to be used a food prop is totally different story!! I don’t even want to start talking about that!!

I think this is a story all food bloggers can relate to , right! No matter how many cookers / pans/ ladles / spoons we own, we can never come out of a store when we spot something new!!!

Anyway, the thali for today is a simple weekday lunch where the green kootu was made in a pressure cooker.

The abri and dal+ tomato was cooker in separator containers in another pressure cooker. To add something extra I added Garlic Paruppu Podi to the mix.

A quick instant mango pickle added a nice finishing touch to the meal.

A simple yet satisfying meal!!!

Hop over to the Greens Sambar post to see how you can prepare this dish under 15 minutes! In the pic below you can see that I have added peanuts while adding the seasoning. It adds a nice bite to the dish. But sometimes I skip it too.

  1. I can never never cook fried rice in a cooker or for ghat matter upma ! I definitely use it , but manage with 3 of them . In routine I need just one that too not for everymeal . I prefer to slow cook my veggies , so it’s only used to boil the dals or chola or rajma .
You surely have to make a pressure cooker special post 🙂
Your spread looks delicious and a healthy , comforting meal .

  2. Comforting thali for sure. And yes let me know about pressure cookers. I have 3 stove-top pressure cookers and two Instant Pots. Crazy huh. There are days when I use them all. 🙂
